a way to use Spotify on the Apple Watch | killexams.com Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

even though the Apple Watch is now in its fourth generation, music playback is still a fight when you are now not an Apple tune subscriber.

if you're are, you might be in a position to access music storage and streaming directly from the company's smartwatch, but folks that don't seem to be - like Spotify clients - are left in a track-less abyss when it comes to listening from the wrist.

we've got considered Samsung and Garmin each cater for Spotify subscribers via a dedicated smartwatch app, however there is still nothing from Apple, regardless of consistent rumors that one is on the manner.

study this: a way to add and play track from the Apple Watch

until that day, you are likely to be attempting to find a workaround. neatly, below, we'll be supplying you with the details to your options for the usage of Spotify on the Apple Watch. Be warned that there is no golden ticket right here, notwithstanding, and issues will continue to be fairly constrained on this entrance until Apple starts enjoying first-class with its rival streamer.

What that you may do right now

How to use Spotify on the Apple Watch

it's not that using Spotify is an entire non-starter if you're an Apple Watch proprietor, or not it's simply that the integration is proscribed. at this time, you might be constrained to just fundamental music manage, which is terribly distinct to the event of Apple song subscribers.

So, if you are enjoying song from the Spotify app in your phone (no matter if that's readily during the mobilephone itself, an external speaker or some Bluetooth headphones), you will get the 'Now enjoying' widget on the excellent of the home monitor on the Watch. once you tap via, it's going to pop up with what's enjoying, as shown in photo above.

From here, that you could pause, skip and rewind and toggle the quantity using both the monitor or the Digital Crown. you can additionally long-press to deliver up an AirPlay to control the place the song is beaming to.

This just about acts as one more solution to access the music on what would be the domestic reveal of the iPhone, and sadly that skill you can entry standalone tune or your wider library.

Is there a solution to the difficulty?

How to use Spotify on the Apple Watch

As we outlined up appropriate, there's no bulletproof solution right here, in view that Spotify doesn't supply a software construction equipment (SDK) for direct tune playback on the Watch.

So, what in regards to the third-party apps? well, again, or not it's no longer top of the line. apparently each app developer it really is appeared to find a workaround over the past couple of years has, if you study between the lines on forums, been discouraged by means of Spotify from doing so.

you're going to need to settle for there is no way to with ease port what you've received for your library, and the subsequent-greatest choice is to locate something that may at least aid you have got slightly extra manage over your music. in any case, while there is many third-birthday celebration apps inside the Watch App save claiming to be your answer to Spotify streaming on the Watch, pretty a lot all of them are only glorified types of Apple's 'Now enjoying' monitor.

Two options that you should try: Serato Pyro and SpotWatch faraway for Spotify. The latter is a paid-for app that offers to give premium members streaming from the wrist. if you're buying the song provider, you'll be able to control what's at the moment playing, as well as in reality decide upon and decide songs from distinct artists, albums or listen to playlists. once again, this isn't the smoking gun, and or not it's fairly a buggy event, nonetheless it's value exploring.

Serato Pyro, on the other hand, is a bit different. even though this app specialises in immediately mixing playlists for you, essentially appearing as a private DJ, it lets you sync over your created playlists from Spotify to the Watch. you're going to nevertheless deserve to stay linked to your mobile, however that you would be able to at the least select distinctive songs from the wrist here.

Is an respectable Spotify app coming soon?

here's the million dollar question, and, alas, we without problems do not know the answer. Spotify's silence on the be counted is deafening - in particular because it continues to accomplice with Apple's opponents - and we suspect more and more individuals are finding themselves switching over to Apple music because of this.

Of path, Apple is notorious for dragging its heels when it comes to approving Spotify updates on iOS, so it be fair to expect here is an extension of that angle to its rival.

the shortcoming of note on the field is mainly frustrating for users given the proven fact that there changed into large rumblings round 18 months in the past that an authentic app become within the works, after Spotify hired one of the most third-party developers trying to build a workaround, Snowy.

That developer, Andrew Chang, posted returned in April 2017: "i'm overjoyed to announce that i could be working closely with Spotify to convey Snowy to the Apple Watch as a part of an legit Spotify app."

"Spotify's potent iOS SDK made it possible to develop Snowy, but I can not wait to take things to the subsequent stage with the abilities and equipment purchasable at Spotify. while I can't give any estimates as to when it can be available, you could rest guaranteed that a Spotify Apple Watch accomplice app is in the pipeline."

We're no longer bound how long that pipeline is, but the legitimate app remains caught in it. The recent integration with Garmin watches possibly suggest that more integrations may well be on the way, however there's without problems manner to know at this stage. stay tuned, though, as we will be updating this book with all the particulars as we acquire them.

The latest virtualization showdown—Parallels Desktop 9 vs. VMware Fusion 6 | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

reader comments 83 Share this story
  • It's that time of year: a new Windows release is coming, with Mac virtualization application updates in tow. You'd think there's only so much you could do with a program that hosts another OS, but these new updates are surprising for their innovation. With the previous release of VMware Fusion 5 Professional, VMware started differentiating its products from Parallels by tapping its established, IT-oriented features. On the other hand, Parallels is pushing closer Mac integration and better 3D graphics support. The latest releases seem to be in much the same vein, but that's enough talking around these releases—let's dive in.

Test Hardware 17-inch MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Sandy Bridge
  • 16GB RAM
  • 1GB Radeon 6770M
  • OS X 10.9 Mavericks builds 13A584 through golden master
  • 13-inch mid-2011 MacBook Air 1.7GHz Core i5
  • 4GB RAM
  • Intel HD 3000 384MB graphics
  • OS X 10.8.4
  • Since both VMware and Parallels are advertising support for Mavericks-ready features, I decided to run the MacBook Pro on Mavericks. (Luckily, the OS has been very stable and, toward the end of the review, became a release candidate). Any bugs in the earlier versions used would have been minor enough to not affect usability as client OSes or as a host for Parallels or VMware's software. And because Parallels Desktop 9 features Power Nap support, I needed to steal my girlfriend's MacBook Air to test it out.

    Dave Girard on Parallels, Fusion Oct. 2012: Parallels 8 v. Fusion 5 showdownOct. 2011: Parallels 7 v. Fusion 4 showdownSept. 2010: Parallels 6 reviewNov. 2009: Fusion 3 review

We'll start with the individual features and then compare the two where the new features overlap (for example, Windows 8.1, Linux, and Mac OS X 10.9 client OS support). As usual, I won't be reviewing these programs from scratch, so readers who aren't sure how they currently stand should read our previous comparative reviews.

    New Parallels Desktop 9 features

Parallels has always been good at bridging OS X and Windows with support for the newer features of the Mac OS. Version 9 is no different.

Mountain Lion (and later) dictionary support

Parallels Desktop 9 adds the OS X contextual dictionary support. As one of the more frequently used OS X writing tools, the contextual dictionary and thesaurus availability on Windows client VMs is definitely a welcome addition. If you are writing and want an alternate word for something you've written, just hit Command-Control-D, and you'll get a definition of your selected words as well as some synonyms.

It's a great tool. While it may not seem like a big addition, for those who use Dragon Dictate in Windows or Office in a VM, it's going to be invaluable. It's not always flawless, however.

The definition is appearing below the VM window. The definition is appearing below the VM window.

But I only saw that once in a while. Otherwise, it's a shame this feature isn't available to other client OSes (although I don't think a lot of people are using Linux for Open Office).

    Power Nap features

If you have a recent-ish portable Mac that supports Power Nap—the technology that lets your sleeping machine do tasks with one eye open while consuming minimal power—then Parallels Desktop 9 can take advantage of this by enabling updates to Windows VMs while asleep. To test it, I started a large Windows update and closed the lid of my Power Nap-capable MacBook Air and checked in occasionally to see its progress. Predictably, it moved much slower through the update tasks. Still, when I came back in the morning, the VM was up to date and had rebooted with the installed updates. Obviously, you don't get this type of thing for free in terms of power, so if you're worried about battery life, double-check in the system preferences that Power Nap is off on battery power—that is the default setting. Otherwise, this is a perfect example of something you'd like to do while sleeping a machine overnight, and Parallels definitely gets points for thinking ahead here. It's a shame it's not supported for OSes other than Windows, though.

    Official DirectX 10 support

Parallels added experimental support for DirectX 10 in version 8 of Desktop, but as the “e" word implies, it wasn't stable and ready for prime time. Version 9 adds full support to DirectX 10, and seeing a new game like Bioshock Infinite run in a VM on high settings is pretty amazing for its technical accomplishments:

Bioshock Infinite in DirectX 10 executing flawlessly, if a bit pokily, in Parallels Desktop 9.

It's a slideshow at times, but it's still impressive for virtualization. Yes, there is a Mac version of this game, but I chose this program because of that limitation and because it comes with a benchmark utility.

In a similar vein to Fusion 5's addition of OpenGL support for Linux VMs, obtaining a top speed isn't as important as adding support since many apps simply refuse to run without it.

VMware and VirtualBox fail to launch <em>Bioshock Infinite</em> and other DirectX 10 apps. VMware and VirtualBox fail to launch Bioshock Infinite and other DirectX 10 apps.

There are the rare professional 3D applications that default to DirectX in Windows—Autodesk's Max being the most high-profile example. It's likely that some of these will move their minimum requirements from DirectX 9.0c to DirectX 10 in the next few years to get more sophisticated real-time previews. Parallels has laid the difficult but much-needed groundwork to see it make it through this transition. I think that DirectX 11, which supports tessellation, will take a lot more work to implement in a virtualized GPU, but the user need for that is years away, thankfully. It's more pressing to support OpenGL 3 and above since 99.9 percent of professional 3D applications use OpenGL. Version 2.1—the maximum version supported by VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop—is getting old enough that we could see 3D applications for Windows and Linux require version 3 in the near future. High-end animation program Houdini already defaults to OpenGL 3 on Windows and Linux, and it will crash if you don't have a GL 3-capable card. CAD and CAM software display needs are basic enough that I don't think they will be foisting an OpenGL 3 requirement on their users for a much longer time to come.

DirectX 10 benchmark in Boot Camp and in a VM

It's not really playable at that framerate, but my 2011 MacBook Pro's aging 6770M doesn't do wonders in Boot Camp either. It was showing the exact same screen rendering as the AMD Catalyst drivers in Boot Camp from what I could tell, and that's impressive considering the shader complexity in Bioshock Infinite. If you're looking to play a Humble Indie Bundle-type game that's DirectX 10 only, Parallels Desktop 9 should work fine on recent hardware. I'm really curious to see how this will perform on the 2013 Mac Pro's FirePro GPU, which is basically a Radeon 7970 with oodles of ECC memory. Since there are two of them, I wonder if they will be able to implement CrossFire to use both GPUs in a virtual machine. Dare to nerdy dream.

Thunderbolt and Firewire drive mounting for VMs

When you connect a FireWire or Thunderbolt drive in Parallels Desktop 9, you get a prompt much like the USB device one that lets you mount them to the VM (while it still connects the Mac OS side the same way):

<br /> Unfortunately, neither the name of my Thunderbolt drive nor any indication it's on the Thunderbolt port are shown. Instead, you get a serial number and generic device ID. Unfortunately, neither the name of my Thunderbolt drive nor any indication it's on the Thunderbolt port are shown. Instead, you get a serial number and generic device ID.

Once it mounts inside the VM, the name shows up correctly next to its drive letter in Windows, and you don't need to have an HFS+ driver, like MacDrive, installed to get read and write support. If you are daisy chaining devices on Thunderbolt, those work fine, and my 27-inch Dell screen still worked the same way passing through my Parallels-mounted Lacie 2big. At first, since you can already share drives to the VM, I was a little confused as to why this disk sharing scheme would be useful. Then I remembered those times that I needed to mount USB disks in the VM as disks to make boot disks, and it all made sense.

    Cloud sync

I frequently test my Maya scripts for compatibility in Linux and Windows. They are already in my Dropbox folder, so it's a big boon to not have to set up redundant Dropbox installs for my VMs. Parallels automatically detects what cloud apps you have installed and sets up that environment for your client VMs. For Dropbox, SkyDrive, and Google Drive, I know I could just share that folder separately, but having the Dropbox folder readily available is a nice touch. The iCloud integration is the most interesting since it exposes the innards of iCloud as a filesystem, sort of FUSE style:

iCloud and the data stored by its applications clearly sorted into subfolders. Enlarge / iCloud and the data stored by its applications clearly sorted into subfolders.

I tested iCloud saving and syncing with a basic RTF text file, and files saved from Wordpad in Windows 7 Pro worked fine when opened back up in OS X. It was a flawless experience overall. Still, I don't know if read/write access to your cloud data should be on by default since it raises potential data security issues you might not be aware of as a basic user. My only real complaint about the cloud integration features is that they are only available to Windows VMs. This seems to be a mantra that's growing increasingly loud at Parallels.

    New VMware Fusion 6 features

Aside from Windows 8.1 and support for running OS X 10.9 in a VM and as a host OS, there are some new things that should make version 6 of Fusion a tempting update. As in Parallels Desktop, VMware is advertising better performance for its latest version, so read the benchmarks to see what kind of bump that translated into.

    Beefiest virtual machines around

Since neither Parallels nor VMware have workstation versions of their software for OS X, they are increasingly adding enterprise-level features to their desktop Mac products. Fusion 6 ups that bar considerably: it lets you create virtual machines with support for up to 16 CPUs, 10 network adapters, 8TB disks, and up to 64GB of RAM for the client VM. Previously, the CPU limit was capped at eight, and the RAM limit was 8GB. Meanwhile, Parallels Desktop 9 still limits VMs to 8 CPUs and 16GB RAM max.

Since I do the occasional 3D model conversion and render in Autodesk Max in a VM, I am very interested in testing support for 16 virtual cores. Unfortunately, I sold my 2010 Mac Pro in anticipation of purchasing the new one and wasn't able to test this out. It's clear that the capabilities are there:

If you're running demanding multiprocessing applications in a VM on a Mac Pro, you don't need benchmarks to tell you that VMware Fusion 6 is going to best tap that added hardware. I'm very excited to see this kind of power in a consumer-oriented (and priced) virtualization product. Your move, Parallels.

VMware Fusion 6 Professional version features

As of version 5, VMware added a Professional version that costs a little more than the base version but adds features that appeal to IT departments looking for added control over the kinds of things their employees can do within their VM. This may not sound sexy, but IT stuff rarely is.

    Enhanced Restricted Virtual Machines

On top of the restriction capabilities of version 5— the ability to limit USB device settings, disable shared folders, control CPU and memory configuration and accessible network devices—version 6 adds the ability to encrypt VMs with a password. Select this option and it encrypts the VM contents.

Fortunately, this feature isn't just for Windows VMs. It worked with my Fedora VM as well. Fortunately, this feature isn't just for Windows VMs. It worked with my Fedora VM as well.

Once you do that, the VM will demand a password to start. I found that this was not a bulletproof setup. It asked me once for the password after setting it but never again to resume it while launched.

That "play" icon at the top right was once a lock, but 'tis no more. Enlarge / That "play" icon at the top right was once a lock, but 'tis no more.

I found out that this is how it works while the application is launched. Once you quit and restart it, the lock reappears. I think it should stay as a lock since a stolen laptop might still have the application launched, which would let the person in unprompted.

What's a little more troubling is that if you don't want to always enter the password, the password can be stored in a Mac OS X keychain. This feels odd since this is the kind of end-user thing you'd want to prohibit as an administrator, but this is the same in Parallels Desktop. I'd say that the encryption stuff needs a slight tweak to close those security loopholes.

    Benchmarks pre-encrypted and encrypted

As you can see from above, VMware's encryption greatly increases the amount of time it takes to suspend and resume the VM because of the computationally expensive processing that is done on the VM's memory and VRAM. While Parallels' initial filesystem encryption takes some time, suspend and resume encryption is almost worryingly fast, and I'm assuming it must be basic enough that it's not causing any overhead. On average it was the same, and the resume average was actually faster with encryption enabled. For VMware users, I would only use encryption if you really need the security, but its encryption is reassuringly slow. If you find that you no longer want it, the encryption can be removed permanently. Also, if you are using a template virtual machine and need your employees to change the password for moved or copied VMs, that is another option you can enable.

    Expiring Virtual Machines

Since a virtual machine is a portable file with potentially private information in it, it's understandable that you might need to restrict its capabilities—even once it's left your hands. Once you encrypt a VM, it enables more security features for the VM. You can even have it expire Mission Impossible style.

    Self destruct!* Self destruct!*

    *Explosion sold separately.

Since some users would think they could just roll back the clock on the host machine, the expiration is managed by an external server. You can limit the amount of time the VM can be used if it doesn't contact the main server—this is similar to how software activation schemes work. This may seem extreme, but I can see this being a very useful way of providing full access to some company data that could save some logins to a VPN that, thanks to the NSA, isn't that P after all.

Single Virtual Machine Mode and Restricted Features

If you want to lock down the ability of an employee to make virtual machines, Fusion 7 Pro lets you restrict access to the application so that they are only allowed to use one VM. On top of that, you can further isolate the VM from the host Mac by disabling drag and drop and copy/paste.

This is one thing that VirtualBox had for a while. This is one thing that VirtualBox had for a while.

With all these added security features, your IT department can finally create a virtualized version of the frustratingly limited computing experience employees have grown to loathe. I kid, I kid—I'm just glad I don't work under a paranoid IT manager. I already have to work around Dropbox bans with numerous clients. Hear my cries, Internet!

    Linked Clones

In version 6 Professional, users can now create linked clones of virtual machines. This lets you have two or more VMs with the same content, but the file size of the linked clone is much smaller because it references the master VM.

The majority of that 8GB linked clone's file size is suspended memory. Enlarge / The majority of that 8GB linked clone's file size is suspended memory.

In 3D graphics, we call this kind of copy an instance, and the behavior is similar. Make a change to the clone and it propagates to the master and vice-versa. If you're wondering why this would be useful, you can change the VM settings (CPU count, network adapter's MAC address, etc.) while keeping the system and software installation the same. This makes VMware Fusion 6 Pro a really good choice for software testing environments where you want to see how a change in memory allocation or a lack of DirectX capabilities will affect the behavior of a similar machine.

So with the individual feature updates covered, let's look at how the latest versions of Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion fare with Windows 8.1 client VMs.

    Windows 8.1 virtualized

The Windows 8.1 update will soon be upon us, and RTM builds have already leaked through holes in the Interwebs. Fortunately, this let me test these updates with Microsoft's next update, so save for any coming point updates, this should represent what users can expect with both apps and Windows 8.1. The last releases from VMware and Parallels featured Windows 8 support, so there isn't a lot to say about how they handle 8.1. It's largely the same—both VMware Fusion 6 and Parallels Desktop 9 let you run Metro style apps from Launchpad or the Dock, for example. But there are some notable changes in each that warrant coverage.

First, let's talk about Parallels. While you could install Windows 8.1 in version 8, there was a showstopping bug that prevented you from dragging and dropping from shared folders into Windows. I was forced to use the copy and paste feature to transfer files from shares to the VM, but this has been fixed in version 9. Beyond that, Parallels, likely sensing people's reluctance to move to Windows 8's unfamiliar and not exactly celebrated user interface, took things into its own hands in Parallels Desktop 9 and added a Start Menu courtesy of the Stardock Start8 program. When you use the Windows 8 install wizard, it asks you if you want it to behave like Windows 7.

It also sets the flags to boot directly to the desktop. Enlarge / It also sets the flags to boot directly to the desktop.

I'm not a fan of Windows 8—call me old fashioned, but I'd rather not see articles about Miley Cyrus or weight loss in my app launcher screen—but this helped greatly with feelings of frustration by avoiding the tablet-style navigation of Windows 8.1's Start screen. You can use all the familiar text shortcuts (netplwiz, cmd, etc.) in the Start8 menu, so this isn't just a half-assed launcher.

The Start8 menu replaces the Start Screen menu and is functionally identical to Windows 7's Start menu from what I can tell. Here I'm invoking the command prompt as Administrator. The Start8 menu replaces the Start Screen menu and is functionally identical to Windows 7's Start menu from what I can tell. Here I'm invoking the command prompt as Administrator.

If I planned to use Windows 8 as my Windows VM, this would be a plus for Parallels for sure, and it's not trialware. Of course, there's nothing stopping you from installing Start8 in VMware Fusion—you just have to pay extra for it.

Otherwise, the “success" of Parallels Desktop 9 and VMware Fusion 6's Windows 8.1 is kind of like a comparison of which isn't worse. Windows 8 still presents too many usability hurdles, especially when you try to make that fit within a unified, windowed Mac environment. VMware's Unity window mode isn't very unified with Windows 8.1 and Metro apps, for example.

Unity windowing mode for Metro apps in VMware Fusion is an awkward experience.

Parallels doesn't fare much better with switching from one Metro app to another in Modality mode.

Windows 8.1’s Metro-style apps in Modality mode in Parallels Desktop.

If you choose the Windows 7 style interface, Metro apps appear with buggy window buffers that can't be clicked.

Buggy buffer display of a windowed Metro-style app in Parallels Desktop 9.

Windows 8.1 is still kind of a train wreck compared to previous versions of Windows if you're looking to really integrate its applications seamlessly into the Mac desktop. If you use only non-Metro apps, the experience should be less awkward, but there's still no magic bullet from either VMware or Parallels to address this. It's hard to say which is “best" for Windows 8.1 since, for me at least, that combines a lot of factors including GPU speed (Mostly Parallels' advantage) and support for many CPU cores (VMware Fusion 6's advantage). Read the benchmarks section to see a more thorough breakdown of those things.

On the bug front, there were some showstopping issues in both Fusion 6 and Parallels Desktop 9 desktop with Windows 8.1 that affected 3D graphics. In Parallels, Autodesk Max's materials editor was nearly impossible to use due to a badly rendered buffer.

Parallels Desktop 9 having drawing issues with Autodesk Max 2011 in Windows 8.1.

This inexplicably went away later, even though nothing—host OS, program, or client OS—was updated. VMware Fusion 6 failed to render shadows correctly in the Heaven benchmark.

This was, however, a permanent issue. Enlarge / This was, however, a permanent issue.

All told, it's a bit early to recommend either of these programs for production-level 3D work in Windows 8.1. If you just need to open a CAD document and hit render, you should be fine with either (though I'll be sticking with Windows 7 for that job, and both work fine with Windows 7). If you're just looking for Office or other non-3D app support in Windows 8.1, you should be golden.

    For Linux clients

Linux VM support is always shaky with new releases because testing is largely weighted toward Windows, as it makes up the lion's share of users. Unfortunately, I can't test every distro, but feel free to do that yourself if you have a few months to spare. I installed not-too-recent versions of CentOS, Ubuntu, and Fedora in both VMware Fusion 6 and Parallels Desktop 9, and the not-quite-out-of-beta status quickly reared its head in Parallels Desktop 9. Launching Fedora, CentOS, or Ubuntu Linux apps from the Dock doesn't work at all, even with the VM already open.

Two of these things don't belong here. Two of these things don't belong here.

Parallels Desktop 9 still suffers badly from GPU glitches in Fedora 17. It was so bad that it rendered the OS completely unusable for me.

Fedora 17 is crippled by Parallels Desktop 9’s failure to render the GNOME 3 activities window correctly

This was a problem in version 8 as well. The issue is widely reported, and the distro is old enough that this issue should have been taken care of by now.

This was an issue in both Mountain Lion and Mavericks, so it's something that can be blamed on Apple's beta drivers. It's been like this for almost a year now from what I can remember, and it's absolutely maddening that it's still a problem. You might say, “well, these non-Ubuntu distros are not needed by a lot of users." But I think that if your smart installer detects the distro, you need to fix its bugs. Otherwise, after more than a year of failing to fix showstopping bugs that many others have reported, you're not looking too good.

    VMware with Linux

With the bar set so low by Parallels' Linux support, it's not hard to predict that VMware's Fusion 6 Linux experience is less painful overall. But it wasn't much better. The Mac menu bar Application Launcher works as advertised with Fedora, but it didn't populate correctly for Ubuntu. The GNOME 3 launcher had its own set of display problems.

Fortunately that cleared up on mouse-over. Enlarge / Fortunately that cleared up on mouse-over.

And this display issue pops up frequently:

The little window that couldn’t: VMware Fusion 6 struggles to resize a Fedora 17 window.

For a while, I couldn't resize my Fedora VM window. Even after that, it would occasionally flicker crazily until it eventually expanded the window.

I wanted to see if any progress had been made in the Gallium 3D front, but the OpenGL issues I reported in my review of the last version of VMware Fusion—improper culling in Topogun, for example—are still prevalent in 6.0.1 in Fedora 17.

How the scene should appear, rendered correctly in Parallels. Enlarge / How the scene should appear, rendered correctly in Parallels. Fusion 6's reliance on the Gallium 3D driver means it has issues with culling that still aren't resolved. Enlarge / Fusion 6's reliance on the Gallium 3D driver means it has issues with culling that still aren't resolved.

Topogun has a Mac version, so this isn't a huge problem for VMware, but it's a good random sampling of a modern OpenGL 2.1 application. Realizing that a newer version of the Gallium 3D driver might be available to Ubuntu users, I installed Topogun in Ubuntu 13.04 and updated it. The same drawing issues show up there, too. 3D performance seems to be about the same as previous versions, so it's not really competitive against Parallels for heavy 3D or CAD scenes in Linux. I realize this is just a drop in the ocean of what you might do with Linux VMs, but if you don't need very new distro support or 3D/OpenGL compositor support, you might be fine with VirtualBox.

As for which virtualization product is better with Linux, I'd say it depends on your needs. For now, I'm leaning toward VMware due to its better long-term support of Linux VMs, from what I see and what I hear others experience.

For Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks VMs

On the bleeding edge of VM support comes support for Mavericks, which isn't quite out the door yet. But it just went golden master, and even the earlier builds that I was using for this review were more than stable enough that it could be run for everyday use. It was a good thing that I got to install the GM build, though, since the recovery partition install for VMware and Parallels' Mavericks VMs wouldn't work with pre-GM builds. This was a problem with native hardware as well as with the recovery installation with developer previews, so it was fixed on the Apple side. While both VMware and Parallels installed the OS from the net-based recovery installer, VMware Fusion was the only one that recognized the disk-based application installer for Mavericks. You will have to use the much slower net installer with Parallels Desktop 9 until the company fixes that bug.

If you're concerned about performance with Mavericks, I did a quick benchmark.

A slight win for VMware in Geekbench but a big loss to Parallels in my multiple mixed-size file copy test. Otherwise, VMware Fusion 6's usability came out slightly on top for Mavericks in a VM. Fusion supports drag and drop from the host Mac into the VM, but it doesn't work in Parallels Desktop 9. It's a small but significant thing that makes VMware's Mavericks VM feel less boxed in. Parallels' Mavericks VM crashed at one time while VMware's never had stability problems.

Unfortunately, VMware and Parallels fail to support OpenGL in an OS X VM, which is beginning to be a problem. OpenGL is increasingly being used by non-3D applications for element composition. I'm guessing that's why neither VMware nor Parallels can get the Mavericks Maps application to display anything but the top marker buffer.

    It should look like this:

Since Apple has been shipping decent GPUs in its hardware for many years now, it's generally assumed that if you can run Mavericks, you have a GPU with OpenGL support. VMware and Parallels may not like the idea of having to write OpenGL driver support for a scarcely virtualized OS, but they will need to if they want to get proper functionality for the applications. The writing has been on the wall for a while now.

Compared to the Free VirtualBox Virtualization Program

I have reviewed VirtualBox in the past, and many users swear by it for the simple reason that it's free and it works for many people's basic needs. But if you are considering it as an alternative to Parallels Desktop or VMware, you should know that it's not really in the same league from a usability standpoint. The interface and options can be confusing compared to Parallels and VMware—it's not immediately clear how you attach ISO storage to virtual DVD drives, and there's a lot of digging through options that seems unnecessary. This may be because the software is not oriented toward the same consumer market as the other programs, so it exposes controls to things that some IT managers would like but most people wouldn't want to be exposed to, like the virtual disk format.

Otherwise, there are just too many things that lack finish in VirtualBox, and these can waste your time. For example, the default Linux disk size of 8GB is too small to install some configurations, but it's only after you get into the installation portion that you realize this and have to restart the VM creation process or shut down and resize your disk partition. (And the latter option has to be done from the command line.) The Windows disk size default is a more reasonable 25GB. There is no auto-setup for client VMs, and you have to enable a lot of things like clipboard sharing that should be on by default. Sharing between the host Mac is not ideal, as you can't disable the network connection without disabling sharing. The interface feels very un-Mac like, with widgets and text that are obviously ported, a lack of Mountain Lion full-screen mode support, key remapping of Control-C to Command-C, etc. If you value polish and the extra stuff in an application to make usability a joy and not just “it'll do," then VirtualBox isn't for you.

Beyond the simple “I don't care for it" things, it's not ready for use with a Mavericks host or Windows 8.1, either. There were so many showstopping bugs that I just gave up trying to include it in our benchmark comparison. Screenshots with GPU-enabled mode were black. At one point the machine woke and the VM wouldn't respond to clicks. Visual glitches abounded in GPU-enabled mode.

    No, that's not <em>Borderlands 1</em> on PS3. Enlarge / No, that's not Borderlands 1 on PS3.

My Windows 8.1 VM crashed at least five times just trying to install the software for the benchmarks. When I ran the SF4 benchmark, it didn't clear the 3D buffer, so every frame would overlay on top of the previous one like a hadouken tracer. It was trippy but, needless to say, also completely useless.

To be fair to VirtualBox, I was testing the unreleased Windows 8.1 on an unreleased OS X 10.9, so it was as bleeding edge as you could get. Still, this is what separates the commercial applications from open source ones that take a more leisurely approach to support: you get release-day support for the next host and client OSes with the commercial products. I'm sure things will get better for VirtualBox with Mavericks and Windows 8.1, but for now, it's a no-go.

    Benchmarks

Since both VMware and Parallels talk about performance gains in their What's New docs, I've included their previous versions for comparison. VMware also said that there are Haswell optimizations in version 6, but I don't have any Haswell Macs to test, unfortunately. If you're a fan of the free VirtualBox virtualization software and are annoyed to see that I didn't include it in the benchmarks, read above—it wasn't because I didn't try.

    CPU and I/O benchmarks

Nothing too crazy to see here, but VMware Fusion 6 wins the fresh boot-up contest, and Parallels Desktop 9 bags the multiple file copy one. For Cinebench MP rendering, it was a little weird that Parallels' previous version took the crown, but it was consistent—all times are averages of three tests. With the Autodesk Max, VMware Fusion 6 pulls slightly ahead for the eight-core render. But if I were using a VM for rendering in Windows, it would be a no-contest win for VMware if I needed more cores, which will soon be the case with the coming Mac Pro.

    Professional OpenGL 3D

The Maya benchmark is almost unchanged from what we saw the last time around: VMware Fusion 6 beats Parallels Desktop 9 handily. But then Parallels reverses that win in Solidworks, which is new on my list of benchmarks. I figured this CAD app was a good example of a 3D program that Mac users would use in a VM, and Solidworks has a convenient GL-based turntable export that can be used as a benchmark. It rotates the viewport around the model and writes the uncompressed frames to disk (the same disk is used for all VMs).

In the Cinebench OpenGL test, Parallels Desktop 9 was clearly the winner. Both versions of VMware Fusion stuttered while doing the GL playback, but there were no disk operations like search indexing or Time Machine backups running.

    Gaming benchmarks

None of these DirectX 9 scores are much of an ad for the power of VM gaming, but it's fair to say that Parallels Desktop 9 is the king of DirectX in a Mac virtual machine. This is especially true given that VMware Fusion 5 wouldn't run Unigine Heaven, and version 6 had some display issues shown previously. If real-time Windows-based OpenGL 3D or DirectX gaming is the main need for your VM, Parallels is currently the best option.

    Mavericks VM Benchmarks

Here I've pitted VMware Fusion 6 against the machine running the Mavericks beta natively, and it's a very close race. As I mentioned above, Parallels Desktop 9 couldn't get Mavericks up and running despite repeated attempts on different hardware. Not much of a contest here until Parallels sorts that out.

    Parallels Desktop 9 Verdict

Parallels Desktop 9 packs some significant upgrades, most notably its support for DirectX 10, automatic cloud-syncing between the host Mac and Windows VMs, some moderate performance gains, and Power Nap support. The inclusion of the Start8 menu for Windows 8 VMs was a smart move, but it doesn't fix some of the awkwardness that plagues virtualized Windows 8 when compared to previous versions of Windows. Parallels is doing the best job of linking the Mac and Windows environments, but I wish that it gave more attention to non-Windows VM support, because Linux support can be hit or miss.

    Pros

  • Smart OS X dictionary support for Windows VMs
  • Slightly improved 3D graphics performance and DirectX 10 support
  • Out-of-the-box sync with host Mac's cloud features like Dropbox and iCloud
  • Power Nap features work well
  • Inclusion of Start8 menu for Windows 8 VMs
  • Moderate performance gains over previous version
  • Cons

  • Linux experience outside of Ubuntu is getting worse because of degrading support
  • Many features like Dropbox and iCloud support are available to Windows VMs only
  • Some annoying bugs like Dock application aliases not working
  • The Take-away

  • A good release overall with some bugs that still need squashing
  • VMware Fusion 6 Professional Verdict

It has been interesting seeing VMware differentiate its Mac virtualization product from Parallels', and Fusion 6 goes even further in this regard. While the non-Pro version also gets the brawny capabilities like 16-core CPU support, it's the Pro version that really stands out. While Parallels' 3D graphics capabilities still put it ahead for games and professional applications, VMware's robust IT-oriented security features make it the best choice if data security is a concern. The linked clone feature is also great for testing environments where you need one master VM but with different settings. If you're looking for solid launch-day support for Windows 8.1, Mavericks, or Linux in a VM, VMware Fusion 6 is highly recommended.

    Pros

  • Support for up to 16 cores, 10 virtual network adapters, 64GB RAM, and 8TB virtual drives for workstation-level VM capabilities, even for non-Pro version
  • Robust features for IT departments looking to lock down sensitive information inside VMs
  • Linked clones minimize data duplication and wasted time
  • Moderate performance gains over previous version
  • Cons

  • Some DirectX 9 and OpenGL issues in Windows 8.1
  • Gallium 3D driver still not mature enough for reliable OpenGL in Linux
  • The Take-away

  • A solid update that will appeal equally to both power users and IT departments

  • Microsoft Launches Free OneNote 2013 for Windows and Mac | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

As rumors implied a few days ago, Microsoft decided to make OneNote free on Mac and Windows, thus trying to compete with Evernote, which continues to be the number one note-taking app on multiple platforms.

OneNote 2013 for Windows, which can be downloaded free of charge right now, works on both Windows 7 and Windows 8, and can be launched right on the desktop for as much time as you want. OneNote for Windows 8, which comes with support for the modern UI, is also free of charge.

Microsoft OneNote for Mac, on the other hand, is already up for grabs from the Mac App Store, again with a free license and providing support for a wide array of languages, including English, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. It comes in the form of a 235 MB package and requires OS X 10.9 or greater.

“With OneNote, you can capture that flash of genius, that moment of inspiration, or that list of errands that’s too important to forget. Whether you’re at home, in the office or on the go, your notes travel with you. And you can share your notes and collaborate with others, across multiple devices!” Microsoft says in the official app description published in the Mac App Store.

Although it’s now available for all Windows users, the free version of OneNote doesn’t come with the same feature package as the paid version, but it lacks SharePoint support and Outlook integration. Of course, a license is needed for these features, but the basic feature lineup is still there to convince you to switch from Evernote to OneNote.

Microsoft is also working on an updated version of the Windows 8 version of OneNote, with people familiar with the development plans claiming that the launch could take place sometime this year.

The new OneNote for Windows 8 build would be part of Office Gemini, a broader set of plans supposed to refresh the Office productivity suite and bring, among others, a touch-optimized version of the product that can be used on tablets running Windows 8 right in the modern UI.

Microsoft has already confirmed that a touch-based flavor of Office is in the works, but there are no details regarding the launch date, but sources close to the matter hinted that it could arrive soon after the debut of Office for iPad scheduled to debut in the coming months.

Review: Airmail, an exceedingly pretty but Gmail-centric alternative to Apple Mail | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

9to5Mac readers know a thing or two. When I reviewed Postbox, after explaining that I had lost patience with the flakiness of late of Apple Mail, several of the commentators recommended Airmail, a lightweight email client based on the popular but discontinued Sparrow app. It’s also the only alternative to Apple Mail and (of course) Outlook for those who need Exchange support.

Since then, Apple released OS X 10.9.1 with Mail fixes. It’s definitely better, but those unread mail counts still don’t update promptly, and my jury is still out (to put it nicely) on Gmail integration and other issues. As I mentioned before, so long as you use IMAP, switching back-and-forth between email apps is trivial, so I decided to give Airmail a try …

Unlike Postbox, Airmail doesn’t provide any canned screenshots, and I do have to be careful not to inadvertently reveal confidential information or breach the privacy of anyone emailing me, so there are fewer screengrabs than usual in this review.

Also, if you have any non-Gmail accounts and use IMAP folders, you may want to scroll down to Accounts and folders below to save yourself some time …

    Setup

    setup

Unlike Postbox, Airmail doesn’t allow you to import account details from Apple Mail. This is no big deal these days – with gmail, all you need enter is your name, email and password and the app will grab the settings automatically – but is a surprising omission. I have a couple of non-gmail accounts, so needed to enter the server addresses and ports manually (you can look these up in Keychain, as that’s where Apple Mail stores them).

One annoyance when setting up multiple accounts: that damn ‘Subscribe to Newsletter’ checkbox is ticked by default every time. In my case, that was six opportunities to accidentally subscribe to something I don’t want. Attention every software developer in the world: absolutely nobody wants to be spammed as the default option.

I’m never quite sure whether to be scared or impressed about how integrated technology has become these days. When I entered the account details of my main personal email, Airmail automatically selected my photo as the icon for the account. More on that in a moment.

    Portability

As is standard with most email apps, you can simply copy the entire mail folder between Macs. This means that once you’ve set it up for one machine, doing so for a second one is just a question of copying the folder over then opening the app. For Airmail, the path is ~/Library/Application Support/Airmail. Airmail makes this particularly easy: just to Window > Show Airmail Data to open the folder in the Finder.

    Look & feel

Apple Mail and Postbox are both inoffensive, but I don’t think many would describe them as beautiful. Airmail gets pretty close to earning that description. I would certainly describe it as pretty.

On the far left are icons for your accounts. At the top left is the currently-selected account (I’ve obscured my email address), with the usual ‘unread mail’ counter:

    account

At the bottom, in the same column, are icons for the other accounts:

    icons

For my other accounts, Airmail picked random icons (mostly of fruit, it appeared). Since I was never going to recognise those, I took advantage of the option Airmail offers to choose your own icons. I used a graphics app to create my own icons, opting for a simple color-code and first letter (or number, in the case of my 9to5Mac account). With this done, my icons were of course instantly recognisable to me.

Postbox picks up icons and avatars from linked social media accounts and uses them in the conversation view. You have to link the accounts before it can do this. Airmail takes a slightly different approach.

Airmail checks iCloud contacts, Google contacts, Google+ and Gravatar to find avatars and icons for your contacts without you having to link the accounts. It’s pretty impressive. Where Postbox uses the images in the conversation view, Airmail uses them in the list view – you can see here that it recognised Amazon’s email address (yes, it is holiday season) and displayed the logo.

    logos

As well as making the app look more visually appealing, it makes it much easier to find emails from particular people or companies, so this is one of those small-sounding touches that makes a surprisingly big difference to usability. (You can switch the feature off if you prefer.)

    Spam filtering

Airmail’s spam-marking is very clear: a yellow SPAM prefix in caps:

    spam

As I mentioned in the Postbox review, it’s always a bit of a pain when you have to start again, training a new email app, and this is one weakness of Airmail: there is no Spam icon to click. To mark an email as spam, you have to right-click then select Mark as spam. It’s a small thing, but definitely less convenient in the early days when you’re doing it a lot.

You can at least set the preferences to delete mail as soon as you mark it as spam.

    Accounts and folders

Switching between accounts is done by clicking those pretty little icons. Anyone with more than two or three accounts will probably want to follow my example and create your own icons. All I did was screengrab one, to get the approximate dimensions, then use a graphics app to create the rest.

Folders appear directly below the inbox area. Unlike Apple Mail, you can’t see folders for multiple accounts in one view. This is much neater visually but makes it much harder to move messages between accounts.

    folders

In Apple Mail, you can simply drag a message to the desired folder in the other account; with Airmail, you have to right-click, mouseover Transfer to account, mouseover the account, then mouseover the folder within the account.

But the far bigger issue with folders is that Airmail does not support automatic filtering of messages into folders! There is no equivalent of Apple Mail’s rules or Postbox’s message filters. I was quite taken aback by this, as it’s a feature I use a lot to keep my email manageable, and something I consider a basic feature that any email app ought to have.

The rationale, I think, is that Airmail was essentially conceived as a gmail client. Gmail allows you to configure your filters in the web interface (though of course applying labels and categories rather than folders), and Airmail recognises these and tags them in the app. It does, though, rule it out for power users who have non-Gmail accounts.

    labels

    Other issues

I did find a few other issues with the app. There’s no way to customise the toolbar, for example. Again, this is a basic that I expect from any email app, and I discovered it was missing when I went to add a clickable icon to mark a message as spam. Nope: it can’t be done.

I also found that it sometimes jumps to high-ish CPU usage. Mostly it sat at less than 1 percent, but would sometimes hit 25 percent or so for no obvious reason. It also stopped responding to right-click once and had to be force-quit.

    Conclusions

It’s a beautiful user-interface, it really is. I liked it so much that I even very briefly wondered whether I could manage without automatic filtering into folders – that’s how pretty I think it is.

But ultimately, as much as I appreciate aesthetics, form is no good without function. My main personal account – an email address I’ve had since sometime in the Bronze Age – isn’t a Gmail one, so the app isn’t going to work for me.

If all your email accounts are Gmail ones, however, I would absolutely recommend taking Airmail out for a spin. Despite the lack of account import, setting it up takes a matter of minutes as all you have to do is enter your Gmail account details and Airmail will do the rest.

There’s no trial version available, but when the app costs two bucks, really, who cares. You’ll spend more on a cup of coffee the first time you use it in your local Starbucks. It’s available from the Mac App Store.
